The
article which is called “Shostakovich: Symphony No 7, ‘Leningrad’, classical album review” was published
16 May 2013 by Geoffrey Norris in “Thetelegraph” discusses the situation concerning the execution of this great musical
production by Vasily Petrenko as the
conductor. The reporter gives his personal attitude to him. Petrenko’s Leningrad Symphony is supposed to him as
a compelling, well-drilled beast. The
article takes a critical view of the fact that in the wrong hands,
Shostakovich’s Leningrad Symphony can be an unwieldy beast.
Speaking of the circumstances under which the symphony
was written, it is necessary to mention that it perhaps impossible to hear it
as abstract music, but nor is it
a programmatic tableau. There is a general feeling to believe that it is
certainly a work that captures the spirit of its time (1941).
But it also stands up as a
symphonic structure, if a sizeable one. Petrenko and the RLPO (Royal Liverpool
Philharmonic Orchestra), adding to their impressive Naxos
series of the Shostakovich symphonies, rise superbly to the Seventh’s
challenges.
In conclusion
the author suggests that Petrenko manages to create a special atmosphere of
this work. To my mind this is a great musical production. It is very memorable
form me and for my country.
